Grief Counselling

Many of us assume grief will soften little by little as time passes, and often it does. For some people, though, loss stays just as heavy as it was at the start. The weeks become months and the sadness does not shift, or it turns into something that is harder to put a name to. A new anxiety. Sudden flashes of anger. A numb feeling that makes it hard to feel much of anything. If you recognise any of this, you are not getting grief wrong. You are carrying more than one person can manage by themselves, and this is just the kind of situation grief counselling in Southport exists to help with.

We know at Hope Funeral Care that it takes genuine courage to seek professional help. Reaching out is among the bravest steps you could take for yourself, and we hope you will see it that way. What we do is put you in touch with accredited, experienced counsellors we trust, in a manner that feels safe and never rushes you.

What Is Grief Counselling?

Put simply, grief counselling is structured therapeutic support, given by a professional, that helps you work through the feelings that follow the death of someone who mattered to you. It is not the same as the broader bereavement support we offer, which is usually more informal and rooted in the community. Grief therapy means regularly seeing a trained and accredited counsellor whose specialism is bereavement. Those sessions give you somewhere private and confidential to look at what you are feeling, free from judgement and with no clock ticking.

A good counsellor will not set out to fix you or instruct you on how you ought to feel, since grief is not a problem to be solved. Instead they help you make sense of how you are responding to your loss, untangle the thoughts that keep coming back round, and slowly find a way of carrying it that does not take over the whole of each day. For some people a few sessions are enough to notice a real change. Others do better with support over a longer period, depending on the kind of loss they have suffered and how deeply it has touched them.

When Is It Time to Consider Counselling?

Grief does not have to become “bad enough” before counselling is appropriate, and nobody should feel they must hit breaking point before asking for help. Simply asking yourself whether you need support is often reason enough to speak to someone.

Perhaps you have noticed grief getting in the way of your sleep, your appetite, or your concentration on ordinary jobs. You could be pulling back from people or activities that used to comfort you, or going round and round with regret, guilt or “what if” thoughts. Physical symptoms affect some people as well, with headaches, a tight chest, or a constant tiredness that rest does not fix.

Particularly after a death that was sudden or traumatic, grief can seem to grow heavier rather than lighter. People often describe this as prolonged or complicated grief, and more specialised support may be needed. If several months have gone by and getting through each day is still a struggle, help does exist, and it can change things for the better. Asking for it is not a sign of weakness. It simply means you no longer have to hold everything by yourself.

How Hope Funeral Care Supports You

We want to be honest that we do not provide counselling ourselves. We are a team that has spent over 35 years supporting bereaved families in Southport, and in that time we have built relationships of trust with local, accredited counsellors who we know will give you proper care. When we introduce you to someone, it is because we are sure they will look after you well.

Not sure yet whether counselling is for you? That is perfectly fine. You are welcome to discuss it with us first, and we will explain what it involves without any pressure to take it further. Sometimes a chat with our team is all it takes to make up your mind. If it seems that our broader funeral aftercare, or the estate administration guidance we provide, would help you more at the moment, we will guide you that way instead. Whatever we do is shaped around what suits you.

You will always find our door on Church Street open, whether we arranged a funeral with you a few weeks back or a long time ago. Ring us on 01704 616448, send an email to [email protected], or drop in for a conversation. Should you need it, grief counselling in Southport is available, it is fully confidential, and we will help you take the first step at whatever point you feel ready.

I cannot recommend Hope Funeral care enough. From our first conversation both Claire and Wendy were clearly the right choice. Their empathy and genuine care for our feelings was clear. Hope have an holistic approach to caring for your loved ones, the small touches that make you sure that what is one of the hardest things anyone can go through is treated with respect, compassion and dignity. I know my husband was taken care of and given a personal loving service which made saying goodbye bearable. I would not hesitate recommending Hope Funeral Care to anyone Thank you Claire, Wendy and the team .

Hope Funeral Care does not feel like a business more a vocation … a compassionate mission. My world turned upside down when my husband died unexpectedly while we were on holiday in Sri Lanka. I was alone on the other side of the world trying to make repatriation and funeral arrangements. I was in shock , grieving and overwhelmed. In stepped Hope Funeral Care. I spoke to Claire on the phone and it felt like she was giving me a massive hug. She was kind, empathetic, but strong and practical, and she took a huge burden off my shoulders. She metaphorically took me by the hand and guided me. I honestly could not have survived those first weeks without her. She was thoughtful about every small detail and just a few weeks later we had an amazing celebration of my husbands life. Hope Funeral Care has a different approach - their funeral parlour is a welcoming home, full of thoughtful touches, not a dark oppressive office. And their care doesn’t end with the funeral. They organise regular meet ups for people who are grieving and may benefit from talking to other people in the same situation. I could not recommend this company enough.

The loss of my husband was too much to take and the care, support and guidance I received was unbelievable. The ladies at Hope funeral care went above all what I expected when I was on the phone in the night I was reassured. Only few times in your life will you need a funeral company. Wendy singing was a highlight and made the crematorium bright a tribute to Sam and his love of music. On the day my family were cared for and even to this day they check in with me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Jen xx

Knowing I had to start enquiring about funeral arrangements sent me into total overwhelm. However, from the very first call to Wendy at Hope Funeral Care, I felt a massive weight lift off my shoulders. I didn’t want a stuffy, traditional scary experience for both me and my young children, I wanted to know my husband would be cared to entirely on site, and that I didn’t want anything that resembled a coffin! Speaking to Wendy, explaining my worries…it just felt right. I knew nothing was too much for them—they showed genuine compassion, honesty, and sincerity, guiding me in decisions that reflected what mattered most. Their thoughtful personal touches and follow-up brought immense comfort. I felt truly held during the darkest, most frightening time of my life, and their ongoing support has meant so much. Wendy and Clare especially went above and beyond to ensure every detail was perfect. Everyone who attended the celebration of life said it was the most uplifting service they had ever experienced, exactly what we hoped for my three young children. The premises are beautiful, calm, warm and inviting, each time I entered the building it felt like a big warm hug and left feeling lighter. Wendy and Clare aimed to give hope—and that is exactly what they achieved. Words cannot express what their genuine support means to me. Both you and your loved one, could not be better supported or cared for anywhere else than Hope Funeral Care.

Claire, Wendy, Katie and Cate are the only people I would turn to in the unfortuanate event of another death in my family. A family member of mine died in very unexpected circumstances and I did not have a clue what I was supposed to do. After receiving a recommendation of their service, I gave them a call. From the moment I spoke to Wendy, I knew that I was speaking with the right people and I was instantly at ease when discussing my situation. From that first call I was guided in a very personable manor through every step. I chose a service at their premises and it has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. The building is beautiful and Claire and her team made everything perfect. I am, and will always be grateful to them for the service I received from Hope Funeral Care and I thank them all for everything they did. Marc Paul.
