Bereavement Support

Nothing really readies you for grief, and no two people experience it in quite the same way. Some days you may feel numb, and others may leave you completely swamped. You might manage for weeks as though nothing has changed, only for the loss to catch up with you without warning one quiet evening at home. Whatever form it takes for you, there is no correct way to grieve and no wrong one either. And you do not have to face any of it alone.

At Hope Funeral Care we care a great deal about bereavement support in Southport. We have watched for ourselves how much it helps when a person is surrounded by the right people through the most painful periods of their life. What we do for you does not finish once the funeral service is over. We remain nearby and on hand for however long you want us.

Below you will find what bereavement support involves, the signs that you or someone you love could benefit from it, and the ways we can help you make a start whenever you feel ready.

What Is Bereavement Support?

Put simply, bereavement support means having somebody on your side who knows how loss feels. They give you a safe and confidential place where you can talk, think things over, or just be with whatever you are feeling. Nobody is trying to mend you or hurry you along to some idea of “getting over it.” The point is that you are never left on your own as you work out a path through.

Support can look different from one person to the next. Some find it helps to go along to a local support group and share with people who really understand what they are living through, since there is a real comfort in being among others who simply get it, with nothing to explain. Other people prefer calm one-to-one conversations with a person trained to listen and not to judge. Some families need specialist support for a youngster, whether a child or a teenager, who is finding things hard yet may not be able to put it into words.

Over more than 35 years we have built close, trusted links with bereavement services in Southport and the nearby area. That means we can help you find support that fits what you genuinely need, rather than offering the same thing to everybody. It is all confidential, it all moves at your own pace, and you will never be pushed to go further than feels comfortable.

How Can I Tell If I Need Support?

People put this question to us far more often than you might expect. Truthfully, there is no list to tick off and no level you have to reach first. If you find yourself asking whether some help might be useful, that alone usually suggests a conversation with someone would be worth having.

Even so, families who contact us tend to mention some of the same experiences. A sense of being cut off, even with other people in the room. Sleep that will not come, or an appetite that has vanished. Guilt, anger or anxiety that does not seem to soften as time goes by. Pulling away from things you once loved, or finding that even small daily jobs wear you out completely. None of this means there is something wrong with you. It means you are grieving, and grief is a heavy thing to carry.

At times the person struggling is not you but someone near to you. Maybe a child, a friend, your partner or one of your parents appears to be finding a loss very hard, and you are worried about them. We are glad to discuss that with you as well. Helping another person through grief can wear you down just as much, and advice from people who have, across many years, stood beside hundreds of grieving families can make a real difference.

Should your grief seem to be growing deeper instead of slowly easing, or should you feel that professional one-to-one support would help, take a look at our grief counselling page. It sets out how we put families in touch with experienced, accredited counsellors in Southport itself.

The Hope Funeral Care team together

How Hope Funeral Care Supports You

We believe that caring for a family carries on after the funeral has ended, and that belief shapes all of our funeral aftercare. Bereavement support is central to it. We do not provide counselling ourselves. We are, however, a team who truly care about the families we look after, and who know precisely where to send you once your needs go beyond what we can give on our own.

We will hear what you are going through, explain the different kinds of support on offer locally, and introduce you personally to services and professionals we have confidence in. Practical worries can add to the load too, from paperwork to probate. Our estate administration guidance is there to lighten that, because grieving is harder still when you are buried under admin as well.

It makes no difference whether we arranged a funeral with you a week ago or a year ago. Our door on Church Street stays open, and the support we give after a funeral does not run out. Ring us on 01704 616448, send an email to [email protected], or call in and see us face to face. Whenever you feel ready, we will be here, and we will help you find the support that suits you.

I cannot recommend Hope Funeral care enough. From our first conversation both Claire and Wendy were clearly the right choice. Their empathy and genuine care for our feelings was clear. Hope have an holistic approach to caring for your loved ones, the small touches that make you sure that what is one of the hardest things anyone can go through is treated with respect, compassion and dignity. I know my husband was taken care of and given a personal loving service which made saying goodbye bearable. I would not hesitate recommending Hope Funeral Care to anyone Thank you Claire, Wendy and the team .

Hope Funeral Care does not feel like a business more a vocation … a compassionate mission. My world turned upside down when my husband died unexpectedly while we were on holiday in Sri Lanka. I was alone on the other side of the world trying to make repatriation and funeral arrangements. I was in shock , grieving and overwhelmed. In stepped Hope Funeral Care. I spoke to Claire on the phone and it felt like she was giving me a massive hug. She was kind, empathetic, but strong and practical, and she took a huge burden off my shoulders. She metaphorically took me by the hand and guided me. I honestly could not have survived those first weeks without her. She was thoughtful about every small detail and just a few weeks later we had an amazing celebration of my husbands life. Hope Funeral Care has a different approach - their funeral parlour is a welcoming home, full of thoughtful touches, not a dark oppressive office. And their care doesn’t end with the funeral. They organise regular meet ups for people who are grieving and may benefit from talking to other people in the same situation. I could not recommend this company enough.

The loss of my husband was too much to take and the care, support and guidance I received was unbelievable. The ladies at Hope funeral care went above all what I expected when I was on the phone in the night I was reassured. Only few times in your life will you need a funeral company. Wendy singing was a highlight and made the crematorium bright a tribute to Sam and his love of music. On the day my family were cared for and even to this day they check in with me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Jen xx

Knowing I had to start enquiring about funeral arrangements sent me into total overwhelm. However, from the very first call to Wendy at Hope Funeral Care, I felt a massive weight lift off my shoulders. I didn’t want a stuffy, traditional scary experience for both me and my young children, I wanted to know my husband would be cared to entirely on site, and that I didn’t want anything that resembled a coffin! Speaking to Wendy, explaining my worries…it just felt right. I knew nothing was too much for them—they showed genuine compassion, honesty, and sincerity, guiding me in decisions that reflected what mattered most. Their thoughtful personal touches and follow-up brought immense comfort. I felt truly held during the darkest, most frightening time of my life, and their ongoing support has meant so much. Wendy and Clare especially went above and beyond to ensure every detail was perfect. Everyone who attended the celebration of life said it was the most uplifting service they had ever experienced, exactly what we hoped for my three young children. The premises are beautiful, calm, warm and inviting, each time I entered the building it felt like a big warm hug and left feeling lighter. Wendy and Clare aimed to give hope—and that is exactly what they achieved. Words cannot express what their genuine support means to me. Both you and your loved one, could not be better supported or cared for anywhere else than Hope Funeral Care.

Claire, Wendy, Katie and Cate are the only people I would turn to in the unfortuanate event of another death in my family. A family member of mine died in very unexpected circumstances and I did not have a clue what I was supposed to do. After receiving a recommendation of their service, I gave them a call. From the moment I spoke to Wendy, I knew that I was speaking with the right people and I was instantly at ease when discussing my situation. From that first call I was guided in a very personable manor through every step. I chose a service at their premises and it has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. The building is beautiful and Claire and her team made everything perfect. I am, and will always be grateful to them for the service I received from Hope Funeral Care and I thank them all for everything they did. Marc Paul.
