Repatriation
Any loss is hard to bear. It becomes much more complicated when the person dies overseas, or when someone who lived in the UK needs to go back to their home country to be buried. Alongside your grief, you may find yourself dealing with international paperwork, embassy processes, airline rules and legal requirements that are completely new to most people.
We offer repatriation services in Southport so that you do not have to carry any of that weight yourself. Hope Funeral Care looks after the whole international transfer, leaving you free to be with your family and to say goodbye in the way that is right for you. Whether your loved one is coming home to the UK or travelling abroad, we will organise everything from beginning to end, with the care and sensitivity that each family is owed.

Bringing Your Loved One Back Home to the UK
After a death overseas, bringing a body home from abroad means working with the authorities in that country, the British consulate, the airlines and funeral directors at both ends. Every country sets its own rules on certifying a death, on embalming and on how remains must be prepared to travel internationally. A mistake at any stage can lead to distressing delays when you are already facing something unbearable.
We handle the full process for you, working alongside international partners and consulate contacts we trust. This covers:
- Working with funeral directors and the local authorities wherever your loved one died
- Organising every document needed, such as death certificates, freedom from infection certificates and consular mortuary certificates
- Arranging embalming and preparation so that international transport regulations are met
- Booking and overseeing air freight or specialist transport
- Meeting your loved one when they arrive here and getting them ready for the funeral arrangements in Southport
Requirements are not the same everywhere, and the process can differ a great deal depending on which country your loved one died in. We understand what each situation calls for, and we will stay calm and guide you.

Organising a Transfer Overseas
Sometimes a Southport family loses someone here in the UK whose final resting place will be in another country. An international funeral transfer in this direction can feel every bit as overwhelming. Export regulations have to be followed, the receiving country will want particular documents before it accepts the remains, and the practical side, including customs clearance, flights and coffin specifications, has to be handled with great care.
We look after every part of it. This covers:
- Completing all the UK paperwork needed to export remains
- Making sure the destination country's own rules are followed, including any requirements for embalming, sealing or the coffin
- Liaising with the destination country's embassy or consulate
- Organising specialist transport and air freight to get your loved one there
- Partnering with a funeral director in that country so that the handover on arrival goes smoothly

How We Support You Throughout the Process
Few parts of funeral care are as complex as repatriation, and few are as emotionally draining. Everything seems urgent and unfamiliar, and it comes at a moment when you are at your most vulnerable. For that reason, we do much more than deal with the paperwork. We keep in close touch with you from beginning to end, update you as each stage is completed and make sure you are never unsure about what comes next.
Once you contact us, one member of our team will be your single point of contact. They will know your circumstances, understand what your family needs and be able to answer your questions, so you will not have to explain everything again to someone new every time you ring. We know how important that continuity is when you are living through something so hard.
Repatriation is one part of the complete range of funeral services available from Hope Funeral Care. When your loved one is home, we can support you with everything that follows, from the funeral arrangements to our funeral aftercare in the weeks and months afterwards. If the practical matters start to feel like too much, our guidance on estate administration is there to help as well.

We Are Here to Help

I cannot recommend Hope Funeral care enough. From our first conversation both Claire and Wendy were clearly the right choice. Their empathy and genuine care for our feelings was clear. Hope have an holistic approach to caring for your loved ones, the small touches that make you sure that what is one of the hardest things anyone can go through is treated with respect, compassion and dignity. I know my husband was taken care of and given a personal loving service which made saying goodbye bearable. I would not hesitate recommending Hope Funeral Care to anyone Thank you Claire, Wendy and the team .

Hope Funeral Care does not feel like a business more a vocation … a compassionate mission. My world turned upside down when my husband died unexpectedly while we were on holiday in Sri Lanka. I was alone on the other side of the world trying to make repatriation and funeral arrangements. I was in shock , grieving and overwhelmed. In stepped Hope Funeral Care. I spoke to Claire on the phone and it felt like she was giving me a massive hug. She was kind, empathetic, but strong and practical, and she took a huge burden off my shoulders. She metaphorically took me by the hand and guided me. I honestly could not have survived those first weeks without her. She was thoughtful about every small detail and just a few weeks later we had an amazing celebration of my husbands life. Hope Funeral Care has a different approach - their funeral parlour is a welcoming home, full of thoughtful touches, not a dark oppressive office. And their care doesn’t end with the funeral. They organise regular meet ups for people who are grieving and may benefit from talking to other people in the same situation. I could not recommend this company enough.

The loss of my husband was too much to take and the care, support and guidance I received was unbelievable. The ladies at Hope funeral care went above all what I expected when I was on the phone in the night I was reassured. Only few times in your life will you need a funeral company. Wendy singing was a highlight and made the crematorium bright a tribute to Sam and his love of music. On the day my family were cared for and even to this day they check in with me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Jen xx

Knowing I had to start enquiring about funeral arrangements sent me into total overwhelm. However, from the very first call to Wendy at Hope Funeral Care, I felt a massive weight lift off my shoulders. I didn’t want a stuffy, traditional scary experience for both me and my young children, I wanted to know my husband would be cared to entirely on site, and that I didn’t want anything that resembled a coffin! Speaking to Wendy, explaining my worries…it just felt right. I knew nothing was too much for them—they showed genuine compassion, honesty, and sincerity, guiding me in decisions that reflected what mattered most. Their thoughtful personal touches and follow-up brought immense comfort. I felt truly held during the darkest, most frightening time of my life, and their ongoing support has meant so much. Wendy and Clare especially went above and beyond to ensure every detail was perfect. Everyone who attended the celebration of life said it was the most uplifting service they had ever experienced, exactly what we hoped for my three young children. The premises are beautiful, calm, warm and inviting, each time I entered the building it felt like a big warm hug and left feeling lighter. Wendy and Clare aimed to give hope—and that is exactly what they achieved. Words cannot express what their genuine support means to me. Both you and your loved one, could not be better supported or cared for anywhere else than Hope Funeral Care.

Claire, Wendy, Katie and Cate are the only people I would turn to in the unfortuanate event of another death in my family. A family member of mine died in very unexpected circumstances and I did not have a clue what I was supposed to do. After receiving a recommendation of their service, I gave them a call. From the moment I spoke to Wendy, I knew that I was speaking with the right people and I was instantly at ease when discussing my situation. From that first call I was guided in a very personable manor through every step. I chose a service at their premises and it has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. The building is beautiful and Claire and her team made everything perfect. I am, and will always be grateful to them for the service I received from Hope Funeral Care and I thank them all for everything they did. Marc Paul.
